Mawingu Foundation and American Tower Corporation (ATC) Kenya Expand Digital Access in Kakamega Schools

On the ground in Kakamega County, Mawingu Foundation and American Tower Corporation (ATC) Kenya are advancing digital inclusion with the next milestone in their transformative Digital Communities initiative.

This programme, born from a strategic three-year partnership between Mawingu Foundation and American Tower Corporation (ATC) Kenya, is designed to bring reliable internet connectivity and digital skills resources directly to underserved institutions across Kenya.

Following the successful rollout of earlier sites under the programme’s pilot phase, two Kakamega institutions — Kakamega Township Secondary School and Matende Girls Secondary School — are set to receive new technology-enabled Digital Community hubs that will expand opportunities for students, educators, and the surrounding community.

Through this initiative, students at Kakamega Township Secondary School and Matende Girls Secondary School will gain access to reliable internet connectivity and a range of digital resources aimed at enriching teaching and learning. These hubs are designed to support:

  • Digital literacy training for learners, equipping them with essential skills aligned with 21st-century education needs.
  • Access to digital learning content, tools, and online resources that supplement classroom instruction.
  • Community outreach programmes that include adult digital and financial literacy, career planning, and entrepreneurship opportunities.
  • Connected healthcare information services, which broaden access to health insights and resources.

This phase in Kakamega complements earlier hub handovers — including vocational training centres, healthcare facilities, and special institutions — as part of the broader Digital Communities model. The programme aims to directly benefit more than 50,000 Kenyans across rural and peri-urban regions, helping to close persistent gaps in digital access and education.

This collaboration with ATC Kenya combines Mawingu’s community engagement expertise with ATC’s robust telecommunications infrastructure to create sustainable, locally anchored digital access hubs.

As the Digital Communities initiative rolls out to Kakamega Township Secondary School and Matende Girls Secondary School, students and educators will be positioned to benefit from new avenues of learning, collaboration, and growth. The upcoming handover marks a significant step toward ensuring that no community is left behind as Kenya advances toward a more inclusive digital future.
